It was the last thing I saw.

Chapter 11

The bright lights over my eyes hurt my head. I tried to raise my hand to block them, but I couldn’t. Why couldn’t I move my arm?

“Stay still, sweetie. We’re putting an IV in right now,” an unfamiliar voice said to my left.

An attempt to move my head to see who spoke was also unsuccessful. There was something strapped to my head, blocking me from moving it.

“Whaaa…” I managed to get out. My mouth was so dry, I could barely speak.

“Spencer, is it? Spencer Matthews of Robinwood Lane?” A middle-aged woman with short blonde hair and worry lines across her forehead leaned over me, directly in view.

I couldn’t nod, so I blinked instead.

“My name is Amanda. I’m an EMT. You were in a little accident. You were awake when we got to you, but you passed out once in the ambulance. It’s normal. When the shock starts to wear off, your body can sometimes shut down in order for it to… well, think of it like a computer. Too much going on, it overheats, and shuts down for a reboot. You’ve been rebooted.” She smiled at me like I would find it a funny joke.

“Acci… dent?” I mouthed, mustering up as much strength to get the words out as possible.

Amanda nodded. “Yes, I’m afraid so. According to the police, you crossed the middle line, into oncoming traffic. Then you swerved to avoid the car headed toward you, over corrected, and ended up in the ditch. We think that’s where you hit your head and your foot slammed into the footwell. It’s swelling up something gnarly, so I’m thinking there may be a small fracture. We’ll be at Bella General in about two minutes.”

An accident. I got into an accident. How had I gotten into an accident? I had a stellar driving record. I barely even sped.

“I found this nearby…” Amanda said, dangling my phone over my face. “Swiped it for ya. I know teenagers these days and their phone addictions. But I must say… was this the reason for your crash?”

I stared up at it, trying to figure out the last thing I remembered. The boat. Emilia. Ryan. Laying out. Lunch. The dock.

A burst of pain flooded my head, and I cringed, unable to focus again.

“That’ll be a potential concussion. They’ll evaluate you at the hospital once they clear your spine. I’m going to tuck this in your purse, which I also grabbed for you.” She gave me a wink as the ambulance slowed down. “You are one lucky girl, Spencer Matthews. Put the phone away next time. I don’t want to see you in this ambulance again, you hear me?”

If I could have nodded, I would have. Instead, I blinked, hoping my appreciation came through.

Mom and Dad weren’t too far behind the ambulance. The EMTs put me into a room in the emergency department, and my parents showed up not ten minutes later.

After they arrived, I had a scan to clear my spine, and then they took off the collar, allowing me to move freely once more.
